Sydney has had a glimpse of its next big skyline star, with the New Sydney Fish Market switching on a preview of its spectacular roof lighting system.
Stretching 200 metres across Blackwattle Bay, the wave-like floating canopy already turns heads by day. At night, more than 400 light fixtures and four kilometres of cabling transform it into a dazzling display, with each roof cassette able to glow in multi-coloured, moving patterns.
The feature will mark special occasions and festivals, with potential for appearances in Vivid Sydney and even upcoming World Cups. Additional lighting throughout the public spaces will help create a vibrant, welcoming hub for the six million people expected to visit the market every year.

More than just a showpiece, the roof is an engineering feat in itself — weighing 2,500 tonnes and designed with sustainability in mind. The building captures rainwater, generates solar power, and uses natural light to brighten its upper levels.
When the new Sydney Fish Market opens later this year, it will bring together fresh seafood stalls, restaurants, retail, and even a seafood school under one roof.
Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper calls the illuminated canopy “a taste of what’s to come with this iconic destination,” while CEO Daniel Jarosch says it’s set to become “a world-class destination — blending fresh seafood, vibrant retail, diverse dining, and unforgettable entertainment all under one iconic roof.”
