Inner West Council calls long-planned Iron Cove Creek path its second GreenWay. Design work is already under way, but there is no construction date or construction budget.

The proposed 3.5km route would connect Ashfield Aquatic Centre with the Bay Run, following Iron Cove Creek through Ashfield and Croydon and alongside Haberfield. Much of the corridor cannot currently be accessed by the public.
Iron Cove Creek is also known as the Dobroyd Canal. It is now an open, concrete-lined stormwater channel and forms part of the boundary with Five Dock in the City of Canada Bay.
What’s planned
The concept includes new creek-side green space, restored habitat and sections of boardwalk above the canal. It would also improve the crossings at Parramatta Road and Ramsay Road.
The Council says the route would be mostly separated from traffic and could be delivered in stages. It is intended to connect the Bay Run with local centres and the broader walking and cycling network.

The community campaign behind the path
This is not a new proposal. Local residents formed Friends of Iron Cove Creek in 2020 and have spent the years since surveying neighbours and pressing Council to progress the path.
Council allocated $100,000 for a masterplan in 2021, followed by a $90,000 NSW Government grant. During the 2023 public exhibition, 225 people completed Council’s online survey and most supported the draft. Council endorsed the masterplan in April 2024 and set aside $500,000 for design work.
Friends of Iron Cove Creek says Civille began the concept design in March 2026 and completed an initial draft in June. The current work covers the middle sections between John Street and Ramsay Street.
The designers are also working through the pipes, cables and other infrastructure that run beside the canal with Sydney Water, Ausgrid and Jemena. Sydney Water owns the channel, which still needs to carry stormwater.

How the original GreenWay is tracking
The original GreenWay opened in December 2025 and runs for 6km from Marrickville to Iron Cove. Council expects it to record nearly one million visits over its first 12 months. On its busiest recorded day, counters registered more than 2,500 trips on foot or by bike.
The project was named Local Project of the Year at the 2026 Sydney Awards.

What happens next
The concept design is still being completed. Friends of Iron Cove Creek expects its next quarterly meeting with Council’s project team in the first three months of 2027.
Council has not announced when construction could begin or how the building work would be funded.
