The NSW Government has announced Bays West, a new inner-city suburb built above the future Bays West Metro Station β€” with up to 8,500 homes on former port land at Glebe Island. The big wins for locals: the Glebe Island Bridge reopens as an active transport link (something the community has campaigned for over 15 years), public waterfront access for the first time in over a century, a new ferry stop, and White Bay Power Station secured as a permanent cultural venue. Bulk port operations on Glebe Island will cease by 2030. But locals have raised concerns. The plan delivers just 10% affordable housing, down from the 30% Labor promised before the 2023 election, with no new schools confirmed and questions about whether the area's infrastructure can absorb a suburb bigger than Balmain, Balmain East and Birchgrove combined.
