Leichhardt local Rick Everitt has once again rallied the community to support The Girls Refuge, a crisis shelter for young women aged 13–17 who will spend Christmas in temporary accommodation. This year’s fundraiser has reached around 85% of its GoFundMe target, helping provide new, practical gifts and handwritten cards for the residents. Locals are encouraged to contribute small items such as self-care kits or to donate via the campaign. A volunteer wrapping day is planned for Wednesday 23 December.

🌳 Tree Poisoning Reported in Strathfield 🚫

Images courtesy of Strathfield Council
Strathfield Council has reported a second case of deliberate tree poisoning in six weeks. A row of street trees along Raw Square near Strathfield Town Centre was recently found dead, with drill holes identified at the base of the trunks. Six weeks earlier, two century-old Brush Box trees on Meredith Street, Homebush were also poisoned, significantly affecting the heritage conservation streetscape. Council has highlighted the loss of shade, cooling, air quality and stormwater benefits as the community heads into summer. Residents are urged to report unusual activity around trees and to submit Tree Management Applications for any lawful pruning or removal.
🏠 Home of the Week 🏘
A 120-year former flour mill, dairy and timber joinery, this rare warehouse conversion brings industrial bones into a calm, modern life with polished concrete, exposed brickwork, custom steel windows and generous skylit living zones. The marble kitchen is loaded with Ilve, Miele, AEG and Liebherr gear, while two fireplaces (wood and gas), formal dining room and sunny courtyard add year-round comfort. A shipping container studio, three sleek bathrooms and a private master suite with freestanding bath round it out. Inner West history with serious polish.

CITY OF SYDNEY COUNCIL
Sydney is set to welcome 2026 with its largest New Year’s Eve fireworks footprint to date, featuring nine tonnes of fireworks launched from the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, city rooftops and eight harbour platforms. New made-for-Sydney pyrotechnics will form native species such as cockatoos, koalas and waratahs, while VANDAL’s projections, created using the DNA of native plants interpreted through Artificial Intelligence, will transform the Harbour Bridge pylons at 9pm and midnight. Festivities include a harbour smoking ceremony, the Calling Country show, a 10pm tribute for Beyond Blue, and a 12-minute midnight spectacular expected to draw more than a million spectators.
The City of Sydney has proposed major updates to its outdoor dining program, aiming to make the popular post-pandemic dining spaces permanent and reduce red tape for businesses. The changes would allow venues to set up dining areas more flexibly — including outside neighbouring properties and on both sides of a clear access path — while converting temporary roadway dining areas into permanent footpath extensions. Five-year approvals, simpler processes, and more greening options are also proposed. If endorsed, the guidelines will go on public exhibition from 12 January to 12 March 2026 to gather community feedback.
INNER WEST COUNCIL
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne has convened a public rally in response to the sacking of all independent directors from the Wests Tigers board. The event will be held on Saturday 13 December at Pratten Park, a former home ground of the Wests Magpies, before a planned march to Wests Ashfield Leagues Club. Mayor Byrne is calling for the NRL and Liquor and Gaming NSW to intervene, saying the governance changes put the future of the club at risk. Fans and members are encouraged to attend.
