☕ Brunch Inside a Heritage-Listed Post Office? Only in the Inner West 🥞
Post Café sits inside the original Marrickville Post Office on Marrickville Road, a building that opened in 1891 and has been on the Australian Commonwealth Heritage List since 2012. The café occupies the original postal hall and is open seven days from 6:30am to 4pm.
The Shakshuka is the dish to order. The tomato and capsicum sauce is the standout; rich, slightly sweet and genuinely different to others around the Inner West. Topped with baked eggs, Danish feta and focaccia. For kids, the Pancake Stack with strawberries, flambé banana and maple syrup is a solid pick.
Genuinely, just go and order the Shakshuka.
🏠 Home of the Week 🏘
Built in 1904 and known as "Westminster", this Federation residence is one of Haberfield's most recognisable homes, sitting on a 929sqm corner block. The Queen Anne-style facade, turret and wraparound verandah are hard to miss. Inside: ornate ceilings, a stained-glass skylight, decorative fireplaces and beautifully preserved timber joinery. A kitchen with walk-in pantry opens to family living and sunlit gardens, all a short walk from Haberfield village. Someone is going to sit in that turret this winter with a coffee and a book and feel absolutely smug about it. Not me, but someone.

🧚 The Fairy Garden That Almost Got Impounded

A family in Annandale built a small fairy garden on their nature strip. Fairy figurines, flowers, a tiny watering can, a ladybug. Something for the kids in the street to stop at on their way past.
Recently Inner West Council issued a notice of intent to impound 13 items after a local made a complaint. The garden sits well away from the footpath and intersection.
Fortunately the Inner West Council Mayor stepped in. Council has confirmed the fairy garden can stay. But not before the community was up in arms, followed by it making national news.

McDonald’s Redfern Decision Heads to Court
McDonald’s is challenging the rejection of its proposed 24-hour restaurant at the corner of Regent and Redfern Streets, taking the matter to the NSW Land and Environment Court.
The proposal was previously knocked back by the City of Sydney’s Local Independent Planning Panel, following 269 objections, just 17 submissions in support, and two petitions with more than 1,120 signatures opposing the development.
Residents will have another opportunity to have their say, with a site inspection hearing scheduled for 28 April at 9:30am at 153 Redfern Street. Members of the public can attend, with six spots available for residents to register to speak.
